Labor Day is almost upon us so Happy Labor Day. Although the origin of this holiday was very political and dates back into the late 1900’s, it is generally celebrated today as the symbolic end of the summer. It is a day of rest, parades, picnics, and all sorts of public art events. Frankfort certainly knows how to celebrate the holiday.
But what do you think about when you consider Labor Day? When you ponder your vocation, does it make you smile? Are you able to do fulfilling work? Are you good at it? Is it personally rewarding? My wife has always said there are only two kinds of jobs. There are those you love to do and those that enable you to do what you love to do. How does your job fit into this description? What is the advice you have for your children and other young adults in your circle regarding finding employment and going to work?
There is no doubt the labor force is changing. People are more mobile. There is a growing trend toward doing satisfying work as opposed to just working for a paycheck. People want to be passionate about their work and have a sense of ownership in what they do. Just look at colleges and trade schools and see who is in attendance. In the past year, I can’t tell you how many times I have heard people tell me that they have finally decided to do something they always wanted to do. They are almost always grinning.
In chapter 3 of Ecclesiastes it says that it is God’s gift that everyone should take pleasure in all their toil. Is that possible? Maybe if we looked at our work as a gift from God we would spend more time matching our gifts and graces to where we sent our resumes.
Be passionate about what you do.
